A disaster recovery plan sitting in a forgotten PDF is just theater. But blindly testing recovery playbooks in active production is a recipe for disaster. True validation happens when you leverage planned maintenance windows and major infrastructure changes to put your recovery procedures to the test under real-world operational conditions.

During a datacenter migration project, we moved a multi-tenant Endpoint Protection platform serving 150 tenants, consisting of multiple application VMs and a clustered database system.

Rather than treating it as a routine migration, we used this planned transition to execute and validate our disaster recovery playbook in a real-world scenario.

  • Ran production from the DR application and database servers during the migration window.
  • Performed a final differential backup and restored the workloads into the new datacenter.
  • Resynchronized the databases and redirected the DR application servers to the new database cluster.
  • Transitioned production traffic to the newly migrated application servers.

The migration completed successfully, but the bigger win was operational confidence. We proved that our replication strategy, sync timings, and failover procedures actually work under real-world transition conditions.

A disaster recovery plan isn't something to verify once a year on paper. Every major planned infrastructure change is a rare, controlled opportunity to validate that you are actually ready when an unexpected disaster strikes.
